Terry Haass (1923-2016), printmaker, painter, and sculptor, was born in Czechoslovakia in 1923. Fleeing Nazism, she would relocate to Paris in the 1930s and in 1941 would land in New York where she received a scholarship to the Art Students’ League and studied under the famed painter Will Barnet. Haass began working at the experimental and influential workshop, Atelier 17, in 1946 where she would later become Director. During this time she taught also graphics at Brooklyn College and New York City College.
Interestingly, her work was greatly influenced by Einstein’s theories of time and space and she incorporated these ideas into her work. Her work is often luminous and mostly abstract, but sometimes retains links to representational forms. The original watercolor offered here is completely non-representational and has a strong presence on any wall. It is presented framed and ready for your immediate enjoyment.
Haass has been the subject of extensive retrospectives at the Kunstmuseum Bochum, Germany and the Olomouc Museum of Art, Czech Republic. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Cleveland Museum of Art and many others.
