Excerpt from 2018 exhibition at Princeton University:
This print represents the year 1982 in a series of inscriptions across twelve postcards. Roman numerals corresponding to the months of the year and Arabic numerals representing the total number of days in the months appear in addition to lines of wavelike writing. When counted, the crests of those lines equal the sum of the integers representing the last day of a month (for example, 30+4+8+2=44 for 30 April 1982). The German word for "today," heute, crossed out at the upper right of each postcard, indicates the passing of the time in which the artist completed her writing. Designed by Darboven, the postcards feature a photograph showing a sign that details the geological history of a site near her home in Hamburg. The artist’s magnum opus, Cultural History 1880–1983 (1980–83), includes hundreds of picture postcards.
