I am delighted to offer this Color Lithograph & Woodcut from American artist Helen Frankenthaler. Frankenthaler (1928 - 2011) was an abstract painter who helped shape an influential art movement of the mid-20th century and would become one of the most admired artists of her generation.
Frankenthaler developed a method of painting known as Color Field (the art critic Clement Greenberg referred to it as Post-Painterly Abstraction) that would be highly influential on the second-generation of Abstract Expressionists such as Morris Louis and Kenneth Noland. In her Color Field paintings, Frankenthaler would use thinned paint that would soak into the canvas and become one with it, emphasizing the flat surface as opposed to the drip technique that emphasized layers and depth made most famous by the artist Jackson Pollock.
Frankenthaler would additionally be highly influential in the world of printmaking. She produced her first print in 1961 and would continue to produce inventive lithographs and woodcuts throughout the rest of her career. Offered here is All About Blue from 1994, a color lithograph and woodcut printed from six aluminum plates and one woodblock. Produced in an edition of 38 (this is example 24/38), All About Blue is a prime example of how Frankenthaler was able to duplicate the vibrant colors and amorphous forms of her own paintings in her print work. This particular example can also be found in the permanent collections of the Tate Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
